Empresario industrial y filántropo estadounidense. En 1853 se trasladó con su familia a Cleveland, Ohio, y en 1859 formó una empresa comisionista que comerciaba en pasto seco, granos, carnes y otras mercancías. En 1863 construyó una refinería de petróleo que en poco tiempo fue la más grande de la zona. Con algunos socios constituyó la Standard Oil Co. (
Ohio) en 1870. Compró el interés mayoritario de su competencia para controlar la industria de refinería de petróleo en Cleveland (1872) y luego en todo el país (1882). Colocó las acciones de la compañía y sus filiales en otros estados al cuidado de un consejo de administración y así fundó la primera gran empresa comercial fiduciaria de EE.UU. Debido a procedimientos antimonopólicos convirtió a la empresa en una compañía de inversiones. En la década de 1890 se dedicó a la filantropía. En 1892 fundó la Universidad de
Chicago, el Instituto Rockefeller de Investigaciones Médicas (luego la
Universidad Rockefeller) en 1901 y la Fundación Rockefeller en 1913. Mientras vivió donó más de US$500 millones y su filantropía continuó con las donaciones de su hijo, John D. Rockefeller, Jr. (
n. 1874–m. 1960), y otros descendientes.
